Visual Work

(Images will open in new window)

I doodle all the time, in my journals, on napkins, the back of receipts, scraps…anywhere and everywhere. And now, I’m finally learning to trust my doodles. My current works are attempts to bring my visual background back into my performance work. Growing up, the only thing that saved me was my retreat into the safe and imaginative world of my own visual creations—sketching, doodling, painting, and sculpting my way through self-hate, suburban conundrums, and unrealized truths. I graduated from the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) with a degree in Graphic Design, loading up on as many painting and photography courses as possible. Graphic design taught me a lot about how to work with text and image. I even believed that I could redesign the world in Futura Light. Today I am redesigning the world through my own design firm in Chicago, Atomic Kitchen Design. You can check out some of our work below. Since my design school, I’ve learned to add to my visual arsenal. I’ve learned to edit and shoot video, build and operate puppets, and create costumes. I’m interested in creating worlds in which puppetry, poetry, video, memory, fashion, and metaphors can exist. I’m interested in visually exploring what my stories look like as much as what they are. All of which will bring me one step closer to world domination.
